Vault Cloud Welcomes Clear Definition of an Australian Business

CANBERRA – As part of the Buy Australia Plan and the Future Made in Australia agenda, the Departments of Industry and Finance have actively collaborated with industry to establish a clear definition of an Australian Business.
This process has been a model example of how government and industry can work together to develop effective, pragmatic policy. The resulting definition is straightforward and robust—eliminating the need for legal interpretation while ensuring integrity in government procurement. Importantly, it aligns Australia with best practices observed in the UK and US.
Vault Cloud CEO, Rupert Taylor-Price, welcomed the clarity:
“This should put an end to the ‘green and gold washing’ we’ve seen since the launch of the Buy Australia Plan. Government procurement is a powerful tool for building a stronger, more resilient economy.”
He also emphasised the need for long-term commitment:
“It took decades for Australia’s supply chains to weaken to the point we all experienced during the pandemic. We’re already five years into rebuilding, and it will take many more to restore resilience to an acceptable level.”
Vault Cloud urges the government to ensure that this definition is consistently applied—including in the procurement data published on AusTender. Additionally, Australia’s sovereign defence industrial base definition should be updated within the Defence Industry Development Strategy to align civilian and military procurement policies.
